HOW TO: Put Newsstand In A Folder On iOS 5 [Without Jailbreaking]

October 13, 2011
By

Please note: This has been fixed, but click here for a new method!

Why can’t I put newsstand in a folder?” Actually, you can! I like every other Apple Device owner, was excited about iOS 5. After installing it and getting everything set up, I was annoyed at the fact that Newsstand is not allowed to go in a folder. Honestly, it’s an app I don’t think I will ever be using. I tweeted my frustration on Twitter. Luckily I found out via a few Twitter friends it it IS possible to put Newsstand in a folder, you just need to trick your device into letting you, and you need to be quick about it. Simply follow these steps:

  • Take two apps and go to create a folder
  • The second the apps are in the folder and it’s doing the folder creation animation, drag Newsstand into the folder
  • As long as you’re quick enough Newsstand will go into the folder!

If you open Newsstand while it’s in a folder your springboard will crash. If you want to use Newsstand at some point just take it out of the folder and you’re good to go!

Huge thanks to @AnataTenshi for discovering it and @_vrn for bringing it to my attention. Another thing to note is the fact that this will also work with a folder within a folder.

Update: Wow!! I didn’t think my post would reach websites like TechCrunch, Gizmodo, Macrumors, Tipb, Cult of Mac, and so on….thanks everyone! Glad you like the hack and thanks for the credit! :)

Update 2: Apparently this doesn’t work in iOS 5.1 so don’t upgrade if you wish to continue to use this glitch, it’s not worth the upgrade anyway.

Yay you posted the workaround I found :P This also works with folder in a folder, but the folders in the folders aren’t functional so it’s not really worth it. Still looking for iOS 5 bugs/glitches, I’ll have any others I find posted on The Coding Massacre. The folder system just seems to be extremely buggy in iOS 5, I’m sure there are some other things I can find wrong with them.

  5. October 13, 2011 at 8:18 pm

I haven’t been able to replicate this on my iPad.

    • October 13, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Hmm…others have. It’s kind of tricky to get the hang of it.

    • October 18, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Works fine on ipad2. As he said you gotta be fast on the draw.

  9. October 13, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Good luck with making that work, how about posting a little video showing how it’s done?
My iPad is just too quick.

    • October 13, 2011 at 11:07 pm

Gizmodo and YouTube have some nice videos showing how to do it. :)

    • October 13, 2011 at 11:09 pm

Worked that time, very odd. Much easier on iPhone.

Thank you so much! Wish I could delete half these things instead…

It helps if you open a ton of apps first, so it takes the processor longer to show you what it has decided to name the folder. Took me like 6 tries on my iPhone 4 the first time with most of my apps killed, the second time I opened all of the apps ony first home screen and some from the second and was able to do this first try. Thanks for the hack!

  12. October 14, 2011 at 12:32 am

So – I totally did this, as you mentioned….but then I didn’t read the part about opening it from within a folder.

I did that ….. then my iPhone kind of restarted … but now Newsstand is nowhere to be found. I literally can’t find it – did a restore and that didn’t work.

Any idea what I can do to get it back? I think I messed something up.

    • October 14, 2011 at 12:36 am

That is REALLY weird. I had (for fun) “opened” newsstand from inside the folder to see my iPod respring. It was still there then it was done, no issues.

Search for Newsstand via Spotlight – is it there? I’m assuming you checked, but it’s not in the folder it was, right? What about another page of apps, or in a different folder?

    • October 14, 2011 at 4:13 am

I had to re-sync it with iTunes and then it showed up. I searched via Spotlight (and nothing) and looked around in the folders…but re-syncing did the job.

It hides itself in the folder preview, try opening all your folders, even if its not in the preview, to find it. Not sure, first account of this happening.

Thanks a lot – you are just great!!!
I created a folder “useless” on my last page – and the other two candidates, game center and stocks just came handy to do your trick ;-)
BTW I came here via TUAW

    October 14, 2011 at 5:22 pm

all good and whatever, but it seems like Newstand still takes up a spot on the desktop even if you can’t see it, so might as well just put it in a separate page

  17. October 14, 2011 at 7:58 pm

    awesome :D
took me a few tries, but it works!!

nice work. However, my iPad 2 springboard resets every time then when I want to start Newsstand ^_^. I don’t use it anyway since Apple doesn’t offer anything for newsstand here in Holland.

THANK YOU! By fare the mode useful hack I have found in awhile. I will never use Newsstand and being forced to keep it on my home screen was driving me nuts. This worked perfectly and now it’s filed away and out of sight with the other apple crap apps like Stocks and Weather!

    October 27, 2011 at 9:52 am

I did this on my 3GS running ios5 and got a glitch whereby app icons would randomly disappear (leaving just the name underneath a blank space). The apps still work and the icons come back just as randomly. Pulling newsstand out of the folder and turning off and on fixes it so I’ll put up with the newsstand icon for now. Might use it in future, you never know.

    It worked for me the first time but when I synced my phone just now, Newsstand is out of the folder and I can’t get it to work anymore, o.x… Did they get smart and put a guard against it or am I just being paranoid? xD;

    Thanks, worked like magic!! Nice~

  37. October 31, 2011 at 10:17 pm

For anyone that might be having trouble making this work, you don’t need to drag it all the way into the folder that quick. You just have to pick it up during the folder animation. It seems you have as long as you want to drop it in the folder once you pick it up.

  38. November 6, 2011 at 1:59 am

Finally, I can hide that dang Newstand app! Thanks a million!

  39. Laura
    November 8, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Unfortunately, this will be undone each and every time you sync your iPhone. I can’t be bothered doing and re-doing this (otherwise neat) little trick every time after I sync so I’ve resigned myself to sticking the app on the last “here be dragons” page. Stupid Newsstand. Figure it out Apple.

    • November 23, 2011 at 9:28 pm

I have synced many times and even upgraded to 5.0.1 and my Newstand is still in the folder.

    Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!
I tried many times and was about to give up but reading down the post I picked up the tip to use Game Centre and Stocks – this ‘paused’ my iPhone long enough to let me get Newstand into the newly created folder. Finally a use for Game Centre and Stocks.
A big THANK YOU to whoever came up with this little gem.

I was able to get this to work, but it caused a strange quirk with both my iPad and my iPhone. As long as the Newsstand was in a folder, when I was in iTunes and I click on the Apps tab, iTunes would crash. As soon as I moved the Newsstand out of the folder, I could access the Apps tab without issue.

  49. December 11, 2011 at 11:21 am

Worked for me as well, thank you! Why they just don’t let you put it in a folder in the first place is beyond me! Thanks again! :D

  67. February 13, 2012 at 1:24 am

PEOPLE! Here it is a TIP. Don’t do it TOO fast. The folder takes 0.2seconds to be created. Just wait for it start to show the items inside!

*Folder into folder is working as well.

Wow, thank you!! I now have a clean home screen once more!!!

  69. February 24, 2012 at 6:53 am

Any idea on how to get it to stay there after syncing?

    • February 24, 2012 at 2:00 pm

As far as I’m aware, no. I don’t know why it leaves for some people but not others. The only other thing you could do is install a jailbreak tweak to hide it.

  70. February 27, 2012 at 7:27 am

I merely learned that two to three weeks ago. Great stuff!

  71. Dan
    February 28, 2012 at 11:59 pm

Bullshit, your a fucking hack. When you create a folder everything else fades away and the only way to move newsstand around is to get out of the folder and then you can’t move it in to a folder

    • February 29, 2012 at 12:00 am

See videos on YouTube. No hacks involved, just tricky timing.

  72. April 17, 2012 at 3:14 pm
