Authors note: I’ve been hearing mixed results on this – some people are saying it works, yet others like me have done it fine.
One of the downfalls of iCloud is it does not appear to let you change your email address that it is under. As you can see, if you go to Settings > iCloud > Account, it does not let you change your email. However, I’ve found a quick workaround. As I stated above I’ve been getting mixed results on it working.

Here’s what I did. This was done about two hours after setting up iOS 5 on my 4th generation iPod Touch.
- I switched all my iCloud backup stuff to “off” (contacts, calendars, reminders, all my other apps, etc)
- After that I hit the big red “delete account” button at the bottom of the iCloud settings. It’ll warn you. Hit delete again, and it will do so. You’ll then be logged out of iCloud on the device. Simply go to the iCloud account login/setup section, and it will then let you put a new Apple ID in the box.
Not only have I been trying to update my iCloud on my iPhone but so has the employees at the Apple store. I was finally told last week that is was not possible….they were wrong! Thank you so much, this worked perfectly!!
All you e the old had to do was delete the old account and reregister the address you wanted. Simple if you are using a iPhone.
I did it on my mac. just delete everything and it will give the chance to create a new email. Best thing is, all of my old stuff was still there. Thanks Devon
I tried this and it wouldn’t allow me to delete my account. I kept getting the dialogue box to enter my password with the old email address. Any ideas? Thanks
Same here – It keeps asking for the password to turn off Find my iPhone… Fed up of this!!!
Same thing is happening to me. I try to delete but it wants my password from my old email address.
FAILED ATTEMPTS AT CHANGING ICLOUD EMAIL SO CAN’T RECEIVE ON PHONE OR PC!!!
ME TOO! I TRIED DELETING EXISTING ICLOUD ACCT, BUT IT WONT LET ME. IT KEEPS ASKING ME FOR PASSWORD FOR EMAIL ACCT I LOST MONTHS AGO DUE T0 A MOVE. I’VE EVEN TRIED TO PLAY ALONG AND ENTER THE APPLE PASSWORD I USED WITH THIS EMAIL, BUT I GUESS BECAUSE ACCT HAS BEEN CLOSED, IT KEEPS SAYING “YOUR APPLE ID OR PASSWORD IS WRONG.”
This recommendation worked for me. Thank you for the information

Thank u been trying for ages … It worked immediately
Worked for me…thanks so much. You can’t find the information through Apple anywhere that I could locate.
Help! I took the advice of another post that said to go into my Apple ID account, change my email address back to the one that is no longer valid and save the changes. Then go to my apple devices and turn off Find My Phone/iPad and delete the Cloud accounts. So far so good. I did all of that, but the Apple ID site sent a verification for my invalid account and now won’t let me change my email back to the current one. I have the option to edit the email address to which to send the verification email, but when I enter my valid email (the one that account had before I changed it back to the invalid one), it tells me I can’t use that address because it’s already in use. I can’t log into the valid email because it says my password is wrong. I can’t reset that password because it doesn’t actually send anything to my valid email address and then when I try to just answer the security questions, it tells me my birthday doesn’t match their records. This is the same problems I had originally with the invalid ID! When I was trying to get rid of the invalid ID from my ipad, I went to the Genius bar who said my only option was to wipe my ipad and start over. I did that but then when I restored the backup… back to my invalid ID. AAAGGGGHHHHHH….
Trying to change my iCloud email address just in settings
IT WORKED!
thank you
Hi this has been driving crazy for months. I tried your first step of switching off all iCloud backup & got to insert your password to switch off find my phone. All hope was lost ad my old email used to set up my appleid has long ago beenswitched off & when I try change my appleid to thhat address it needs to verify. So I took a chance & entered my current appleid password even though iCloud shows the wrong id. Miracles it worked! Was able to delete iCloud & reinstall with correct id & everything works again! Yay no more constant messages telling me iClod needs to verify my id. Thank you for setting me on the right path, this has been bugging me for 6 months
